What horses can be entered in a futurity event? Any horse that is 4 OR 5 years old, and has never been entered in any kind of race. They can participate in a time only, but cannot have ever been entered in an event. For example, if a horse turns 4 years old on March 15, 2023 then their 4 year old futurity year starts November 15, 2022. November 15, 2022 through November 14, 2023 is their futurity year as they only get one year of futurity eligibility. How do I know which futurities my horse can be entered in? The incentives for barrel races play a role in which horses can be entered in some events. Some incentives have stand alone races, and some are just side pots that add money at existing races. Read the fine print for each race. Many futurities can be entered by any horse, other than the Pink & Ruby Buckle which horses have to be nominated for. Is it best to take a horse to futurities as a 4 or 5 year old? This varies by horse and owner. It depends on when the horse was started, how much it was ridden, and how well it handles pressure. Know your horse and let your plan be flexible. Ask your trainer what your horse needs! There's nothing wrong with waiting for that 5 year old year if your horse isn't ready.
